Normal red blood cells have a biconcave, disc-like shape and contain enormous amounts of a protein called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin helps red blood cells bind to and transport oxygen to cells and tissues of the body. WebSickle-shaped cells break down faster than normal red blood cells. There may be too few red blood cells around to do their job. This is called anemia. A person with anemia feels tired and has less energy.
