Whereas oxides are normally regarded harmful, sulphides plays a tricky role in determining steel properties such as machinability. WebInclusions may be introduced during melting and inert gas atomization; their source is the refractory tundish or pouring nozzle used in conventional gas atomization. The inclusions act as sites of stress concentration and can result in the initiation of fatigue cracks. This effect is of prime concern in components for aircraft engine applications.
